SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARDS
The recipients are honored at a luncheon on April 27 in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom, for their fulfillment of the university’s motto, “A Measure of a Life is its Service.” The SHSU Alumni Association’s newsletter, Kat Konnection, said this about Mr. Magee: A retired music teacher for the Brazosport school district, where he taught for 37 years, John Magee brought “pride to that district” and influenced “thousands of students who have never forgotten him.”
Magee received his bachelor’s degree from SHSU in vocal music in 1950 and his Master of Music Education degree from the University of Houston in 1954. As a teacher, he developed a first-class choral program at Brazosport; directed award-winning “Sweepstakes” choirs; and led Freeport High School to a second place in a statewide recording contest.
After retiring in 1983, Magee’s influence spread to the community, where he has served as music director for community musicals, founder and director of the Brazos Area Boy Choir, and as a part-time music minister at three community churches. In 2001, his accomplishments were recognized through the renaming of the high school auditorium to the John Magee Performance Center.
